It provides advanced file transfer capabilities, remote resource access (disk mapping
and connection sharing), and remote control capabilities.
These features comprise a comprehensive solution to your wide area networking needs.
PC-to-Mainframe Connectivity
APTNet can use your existing mainframe connections to communicate between PCs and IBM
System/370 or Unisys hosts. APTNet communication between PCs and mainframes provides
LAN-to-LAN routing, mainframe-based file transfers, and the use of a virtual disk on IBM
System/370 mainframes.
File Transfers
APTNet performs background file transfers and foreground DOS copies. An APTNet
background file transfer can be one file or a group of files. Background file transfers
can be point-to-point or store-and-forward. And, background file transfers can occur
immediately or be scheduled to occur at a later time.
APTNet also tracks and restarts interrupted file transfers. You can access status
screens to follow the transfer while it is crossing the WAN or, you can view audit trails
of the transfer after it completed. If, while crossing the WAN, a transfer is interrupted,
it can be automatically restarted from the point of interruption.
Disk and Printer Mapping
Mapping to remote disk drives is done through drive letters and mapping to remote
printers is done through printer port assignments. Just like with a LAN, access to remote
disk drives and printers is transparent. Once mapped, your local applications can access
files on remote drives and print to remote printers without additional configuration or
hardware.
Remote Control
The remote support capabilities of APTNet include the ability to remotely view, run, or
reboot a remote workstation and a simple messaging system. You can use the remote view,
run, and reboot capabilities to run your PC from home or to help another user through a
problem. Or, you can use the messaging system of APTNet to conduct real-time, on-line
conversations through windows, send messages to one user, an entire LAN, or the entire
WAN. With APTNet, remote support is as easy as running a program on your PC.
Mainframe Integration
You can include mainframes on your WAN through APTNet/MVS, and APTNet/A-Series
products. These products extend your APTNet WAN to IBM System/370 mainframes running MVS
operating systems or Unisys A-Series mainframes through your existing connections. Once
included in an APTNet WAN, your mainframes can be used to route information between PCs
or, they can share information with PCs.
When APTNet software is installed on your mainframe and your PC, you can transparently
route information through your mainframe. For example, you can transfer files to your
mainframe, from your mainframe, or through your mainframe to a remote PC. Or, you can
remote control a PC on a LAN that you transparently accessed through your mainframe. You
can also create a PC virtual disk on your IBM mainframe. This means that you can store and
access PC files on your IBM System/370 mainframe. And best of all, adding your mainframe
to your WAN does not require additional hardware, just APTNet.
